Trackback took a while for me to really understand, too. One way to think of it is just how you used it here - as a kind of 'remote comment' on a post. When you pinged me, it notified me via e-mail of your post, and updated the page on my site to list your post. That's really the gist of the whole thing right there, an automated system to reference posts on other sites, and let them know that you're doing it. Pretty nifty indeed!
